In 1876 Nikolaus August Otto developed the world’s first four stroke internal combustion engine. 

By the end of the same year, Wilhelm Maybach had improved the design and initiated full scale production of a usable four stroke engine.

The beloved four stroke petrol engine has undergone countless revisions and improvements since 1876 to become the quintessential example of human technological achievement. Sir William Lyons, Jaguar's founder summed up our love for the motor vehicle when he so eloquently said “Creating a car is the closest thing to creating a living being.”
